What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound (sonography) is an imaging technique that uses sound waves. It is excellent for visualizing soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints.
A major advantage of ultrasound is the possibility of dynamic examination: structures can be assessed in motion, which is not possible with other imaging techniques.
Since no X-ray radiation is used, the examination is completely safe and can be repeated as often as needed - even for pregnant women and children.
Infant Hip Screening
Ultrasound examination of the infant hip is an important part of preventive check-ups (U3). It is used for early detection of hip dysplasia or hip dislocation.
When detected early, hip maldevelopment can be treated very effectively and later complications can be avoided.
Benefits of Ultrasound
Applications
Infant Hip Screening
Early detection examination for hip dysplasia in newborns
Tendons and Ligaments
Assessment of tendon tears, inflammation, and calcifications
Joints
Effusion, bursitis, synovitis
Muscles
Muscle fiber tears, hematomas, tumors
Ganglia and Cysts
Soft tissue swellings at joints
How the Examination Works
Preparation
Exposing the body area to be examined. Applying ultrasound gel for optimal image quality.
Examination
The physician moves the transducer over the skin and views the structures on the screen. Movements are performed if needed.
Results
Immediate discussion of findings. Documentation of images if needed.
